Here's a little story to tide you over whilst walls and ceilings continue to topple around us.

Two years ago, the Divine L and I hopped over to Bruges for a couple of days. We decided to have dinner at a cosy little fondue restaurant where the friendliness of the proprietor prompted us to engage him in some polite conversation, not least about the fact that the whole town was covered in Christmas decorations even though we were there in the middle of February. He explained that we were in a 'temporal anomaly' (must be a term I picked up from some 80s Doctor Who episode) because a movie was being made in the town... a movie set during Christmas... a movie which we have since discovered was the delicious In Bruges. Anyway, we ate up, paid up and left.

A few weeks ago, the Divine L and I hopped over to Gent for a couple of days. We decided to have dinner at a cosy little fondue restaurant and imagine our surprise when we were greeted by the same friendly proprietor from Bruges!

"But it can't possibly be him," I said. "That's just crazy."

The Divine L kept studied his face as surreptitiously as she could. "I think it might be him, you know."

"But he told us he'd be retiring soon."

As he brought some nibbles over, L cleared her throat and asked him if he'd ever run a fondue restaurant in Bruges.

"You recognize me?" he asked, his eyebrows reaching up over his forehead.

It turns out he was one and the same guy, and yes, he had retired shortly after we'd been to Bruges, but every now and then, he helps out at his daughter's restaurant in Gent.

I love impossible coincidences.
